SMARTMEDIA Toshiba America announced in August 1999 a 64 megabyte
(MB) SmartMedia card. Toshiba achieved this density by
packaging two single level cell 256Mb NAND flash
Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM)
die in the SmartMedia package. It operates with a 3.3 volt
(V) single power supply. It's priced at $250, though the
price may go down in the fourth quarter as production
increases.
COMPACTFLASH TYPE II (CF/2) The CompactFlash type II (CF/2) was adopted by the CompactFlash Association in March 1998, and is actually thicker, at 5mm , than standard CompactFlash cards, which are 3.3mm thick. The CF/2 standard allows other technologies to do adapted to CompactFlash, including disk drives like the IBM Microdrive. The CF/2 slots will support the older CompactFlash cards, but the new cards will not fit in a regular CompactFlash slot. Manufacturers are also making CF/2 adapters that will allow them to be plugged into a PC Card slot. Cameras that support CF/2 are: Canon Pro 70, Panasonic's PV-2590 and PV-2090, and the upcoming Casio QV-2000UX. In July 1999 Delkin Devices started shipping
CompactFlashú type II (CF/2) cards in four capacities up to
80MB. They will start shipping 224MB units in Q4 1999. CompactFlash Type II (CF2) card, plugged into CF2 Adapter and a Delkin eFilm 224MB CF2 card. (Courtesy Delkin Devices, Inc) |
