SMIL

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) released April 16, 1998 the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language Specification (SMIL). Created by the W3C Synchronized Multimedia Working Group, SMIL is an XML-based language for writing "TV-like" multimedia presentations for the World Wide Web.

SMIL is a layout language, and is very similar to HTML; a SMIL file is a text file and the syntax contains tags and syntax much like HTML.

RealNetworks has adopted SMIL for use with it's RealSystem G2. You can find more information about SMIL at an FAQ page on their website.
