8mm
The
8mm video cassette format was introduced in the
mid-1980s. 8mm video cassetts are small, but they
deliver an argueably better picture than standard
VHS tape. The 8mm format is similar in resolution
to VHS - about 250 horizontal lines.
While
8mm did not fair well as a consumer player format
(VHS remains the standard), the small size of 8mm
camcorders has resulted in large sales in the
camcorder market. Another notable advantage of the
early 8mm camcorders was that they all included
flying
erase heads,
something not found in cheaper VHS vcrs at that
time.
