Apr 11, 2000 MetaCreations Software gets new owners MetaCreations recently announced that they were getting out of the graphics software business to focus on their MetaStream product. Which left owners of programs like Poser, Painter and Bryce wondering what would happen. Well now the answers are starting to appear. Corel has acquired the following products: MetaCreations Painter, MetaCreations Painter Classic, MetaCreations Painter 3D, Art Dabbler, KPT, KPT-X, Vector Effects and Bryce. Corel has also agreed to honor support and upgrade privileges to registered owners of Bryce 4, KPT 5, KPT 6, KPT Vector Effects and MetaCreations Painter 6, subject to proof of purchase and within applicable time limits. Corel plans to launch new versions for both the Web and retail distribution channels throughout the year. It also plans to broaden the range of localized versions worldwide. Also, it was announced that the MetaCreations Painter 6.0.3 patch will soon be made available to registered users at: www.metacreations.com/products/painter6/patches And while there was little public announcement, Adobe has acquired the 3D application Canoma from MetaCreations. Canoma can create 3D models based on photographs taken of an object or scene. Adobe has also now acquired Carrara, the new 3D modeling application that MetaCreations had introduced to replace Ray Dream Designer.
DVD week at NAB Apple has purchased the DVD software developed by Astarte (who developed the CD burner software Toast.) Astarte has two DVD authoring tools, one that sells for $5,000 for complete DVD authoring, and the other which costs about $1,000 for authoring simple DVD's (no menus.) This is definitely a curious purchase for Apple, and I can't help wonder what they are planning to do with this.
Terran Interactive will integrate Sonic's AuthorScript technology directly into Media Cleaner Pro, enabling users to publish video content directly to DVD from the Media Cleaner Pro application. Sonic AuthorScript will allow Media Cleaner Pro users to convert a wide range of video formats into DVD-Video files for playback on set-top DVD-Video players or DVD-equipped PCs. Sonic AuthorScript is the core DVD formatting engine that Sonic uses in its high-end DVD Creator and DVD Fusion authoring systems, as well as in Sonic DVDit!, the Windows-based DVD publishing application. Sonic AuthorScript runs on both the Windows and Macintosh platforms.
